Invitation Wording

Not sure how to word your wedding invitation? Below are examples to help guide you, from the traditional church wedding to a more modern, contemporary ceremony. Special introductions and wedding invitation recommendations are also noted below.

Wedding Invitation Wording

Below you will find examples of how an invitation is properly worded for different faith traditions, family configurations and types of events. Once you find the one that works best for your wedding, you can use the chosen format below when ordering and personalizing your invitations. Keep these eight helpful tips in mind as you choose the wording for your wedding stationery.

  1. Spell out words such as Doctor, Avenue and Junior. The word "junior" is most commonly written out on wedding invitations, but it can be abbreviated if your names are lengthy and if you are short on space.
    Brian Daniel Miller, junior
    Brian Daniel Miller, Jr.
  2. Spell out middle names. If you are short on space, rather than an initial, just use the first and last names.
  3. Date and time are always spelled out; for example, use "fifth of July" rather than "July 5" and use "half after six" rather than "6:30". Numbers that are included in an address may be written using numerals.
  4. Use the phrase "honour of your presence" when you are having your ceremony in a house of worship. Otherwise use "pleasure of your company."
  5. Use the joining word "and" on a line by itself only when joining the bride's and groom's names, helping them stand out from the rest of the invitation wording.
  6. The use of "Miss" versus "Ms." before the bride's name is based on personal preference and may depend on whether or not this is the bride's first marriage.
  7. When both the bride's and groom's parents' names are on the invitation or if the bride's last name is different from her parents', the bride's last name is included.
  8. Traditional wording often uses the preposition "to" between the bride's and groom's names; however, traditional Jewish invitations use the word "and". You will also find "and" used in the traditional wording for invitations to many Catholic ceremonies. Basically, the use of "to" or "and" is a personal preference.
Traditional Church Ceremony

Follow this example where the bride's parents host the wedding and is held in a house of worship.

Roman Catholic Wedding

The phrase "Nuptial Mass" is included if the ceremony will be part of a Catholic Service. It is helpful to include this for your guests, since a Nuptial Mass lasts longer than the typical marriage ceremony.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert John Williams
request the honour of your presence
at the Nuptial Mass uniting their daughter
Sarah Anne
and
Mr. Brian Daniel Miller
in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony
Saturday, the seventh of June
