WAY Overdue First Kiss

WAY Overdue First Kiss

Jay and I met when we were sophomores in high school—we had both never dated anyone before, but somehow we got past the initial awkwardness and teenage insecurities and became typical high school sweethearts: permanently attached at the hip. We also decided not to kiss—yes, two dating teenagers decided voluntarily not to kiss until marriage. Miracle—isn’t it? Four months later—horror of all horrors—Jay’s family moved four hours south to Houston. Like any good attached-at-the-hip high school sweethearts, we were absolutely devastated. With the help of Free Night & Weekend cell phone minutes (we’re talking thousands) and once-a-month-visits, we made it through and ended up going to college together. Later on in college, we started talking about getting engaged. Coincidentally (not), we also decided that kissing each other for the first time in front of 250 people was decidedly a bad idea, and we would much prefer a proposal first kiss. We picked out a ring in September, but Jay threw me off the scent until February, when he took me out almost exactly four years after our first date. We went to a nice restaurant and went high-speed indoor go-karting in our “fancy” clothes. I was (amazingly) still oblivious to Jay’s intention the entire time, until he took me to the “Spoonholder” on the OU campus. The “Spoonholder” is a round concrete bench built by OU students in the 1950s—the legend is that if you kiss your significant other in the Spoonholder, you will be with that person forever. Jay showed me a slideshow listing 84 completely random reasons why he loved me, ranging from “You like earthy tones” to “You will make a great mother.” Then he asked me to marry him--I said yes, and to seal the deal, we shook on it. Just kidding! We shared our first kiss. In fact, yours truly went in for the first move! If that Spoonholder legend holds any water, we’ll be stuck with each other for a RIDICULOUSLY long time. That’s okay, though—I kind of like him.

I know Marissa personally, and I'm not surprised, at all. They're adorable--I'm usually pretty skeptical of "aww we waited" stories, but they're pretty legit. ^^ Good luck guys, I'm envious!

What a wonderful and exceptional story! Who would believe teenagers today could abstain from kissing......I know I couldn't. Knowing this young lady very well, it's easy to believe her story. She was raised by exceptional parents with very high morals. My Daughter! Grandpa Joe.
